Chapter 14

Alan’s mind raced as Brin strode confidently through the group to place her bedroll. What were the odds of her turning up? What were the odds that she was the final party member of the party they had just happened to run into first in the lobby and now again? London was a large city and while Alan didn’t discount coincidences, he was struggling to believe in them right now.

Especially when she was pretending not to know him.

** [Scholar Carl]: Alan, her name is Brin. **

** [Scholar Carl]: Is she that Brin? **

** [L. Disciple Alan]: Yeah, the very same. **

** [Scholar Carl]: What are the odds? **

** [L. Disciple Alan]: I was just thinking that. **

** [Fighter Ella]: Do we trust her? **

** [L. Disciple Alan]: I - no. No, I don’t think we can. **

The two groups had now set up their respective sites; a polite but tactical distance apart. The lure of the safety of the boss chamber - and now there was an irony - was apparently too much to resist but Alan didn’t blame the others for taking a cautious approach. He guessed that if and when they caught any sleep, one or two of them would just “happen” to be awake at any given time. He sent a quick message to the group chat suggesting the same thing and got three rapid agreements.

And then there was Brin. Either she had felt him staring or had business in her own mind because once she had placed her things she glanced around the chamber and strolled confidently over to Alan. Every eye in Alan’s party tracked her, plus a couple in Lee’s party too.

Politeness be damned, he had to know who he was dealing with. He stared a little closer at the approaching figure.

<Force Mage Brin>

<Level 18>

Was that smile on Brin’s face because she noticed him reading her level? If so, she didn’t react any further.

“Alan,” she said warmly, “Lee mentioned that he ran into you before. I think we’re all impressed that your party made it down this far on your first attempt.”

“Second, actually,” Alan said after a moment’s pause. “We ducked out after the third floor the first time. Didn’t have enough supplies.”

“Really? How interesting! And did you have any difficulty with this floor’s boss? Your levels must have been about equal.”

Not like you, Alan thought, and why is your level so much higher than the rest of your party?

But he didn’t voice his concern; instead, he just shrugged and said “It was tough. We’re hoping we can avoid fighting the next one altogether - we almost have all the relics we need.”

“Oh, wonderful,” Brin said. “Do you think you could walk me through how you defeated it? I’m guessing it had something to do with that impressive hole in the wall over there.”

She gestured at the wall and - face hidden from the rest of the chamber behind her - winked.

“... sure,” Alan said.

** [L. Disciple Alan]: What’s going on? **

** [Scholar Carl]: I think she’s flirting with you, man.
